Yes, we're finally updating this!
It's been a long time since you all heard from us. Here it is June already,
and Emily's birthday is unbelievably close. She's doing splendidly, and
we're having so much fun with her. She's a very happy child - giggles easily
and often, and even when she does cry, is easily soothed (and yes, we know
we're lucky). She is very mobile, though not walking yet - she has stood
alone a few times, but feels more comfortable crawling around at high speeds.
She also likes hanging out on the coffee table (leaning on it), playing
with any toys, books, vases, mugs that we are stupid enough to leave within
her reach.
She has 5 teeth now - the middle bottom two are well in (they came
in February) and three of the top ones just came in last week. She wasn't
very fussy with them, but her appetite was down, so she's still a compact
thing at just over 17 pounds, and between 26 and 27 inches tall.
She sleeps most nights 8-10 hours. Every other night she'll wake up
around 3:00 or 4:00 and cry, but by the time Janet gets back from the bathroom,
she's settled back down, so night-time feedings are rare these days. Janet's
still nursing her quite a bit - no cow's milk or meat until her first birthday
according
to our doctor, and we're honoring that. She's been so healthy ever since
birth - a few sniffles now and then and a couple of mild fevers post-vaccinations
are all we've had to deal with - and we gratefully credit the nursing for
that. We've been teaching her some sign language - words like eat, bath,
more, milk and change - and she has the milk sign down pat. After breakfast,
she'll play in the living room while Mom reads the paper, and after an
hour, she'll crawl over to Mom's chair and sign milk and give a big grin
- and she gets to nurse more. She's communicating! and it really thrills
her.
Chris is keeping busy at Audio Partners - working on programming some
really neat tools lately to make everybody's jobs easier - Janet's impressed
by what she's seen. And the garden is glorious - the one picture
of the Dutch Iris is only the tip of the iceberg - new flowers and plants
every day - you have to come visit us and see it! And that's all
Chris's doing - Janet's contribution is feeding the compost heap.
Janet's enjoying Emily's afternoon naps and doing some exploratory
cooking. Though she's always liked cooking for parties, day-to-day meals
were kind of a drag. But she's getting the hang of it, and gradually
becoming a better cook. Chris is a cheerful guinea pig for the new recipes.
Janet's also been doing some freelance proofreading for Audio Partners
- keeping her hand in and earning a little extra money. And one weekend
she worked in the office again, and enjoyed it for a change (Chris watched
Emily).
We had our first dinner out sans Emily at the end of March for Janet's
birthday, and vowed to do it again (but somehow it hasn't happened yet).
Grandpa John and his friend (and ours) Jo Ann watched Emily, who was very
well-behaved in our absence - until she saw us walking up the sidewalk
- then she burst into tears!
We also had a big trip to Dallas/Ft. Worth in May to see numerous relatives,
to wit: Janet's sister Karen, Janet's Aunt Joyce and Uncle Jimie and Uncle
David, Chris's Aunt Kay and Uncle Larry and Great Aunt Lenore and Great
Uncle Lou (visiting from Minnesota), and Chris's parents came in from Arizona.
Aren't we lucky to have so many people in one place! It was a whirlwind
trip - four homes in five days - but we had a lot of fun and Emily weathered
the trip well. Next month, after Emily's birthday, we head off to
Chicago and Iowa to see friends of Janet's and go to Chris's 20th high
school reunion.
That about sums up our lives lately - write and let us know what's
up with you! |
